Special Olympics Swim Team

Welcome to a new chapter in inclusion and excellence — the YMCA of Georgia’s Piedmont is proud to launch our Special Olympics Swim Team, built for athletes ages 8+ who are ready to train, compete, and belong. This isn’t swim lessons — it’s a competitive, supportive program for swimmers with intellectual or developmental disabilities who already meet key skills like swimming one length independently, floating on their back, and entering/exiting the water without help.

With practices hosted at our Walton County branch in Monroe (which features an 8-lane lap pool and a warm-water rec pool) and at our Brad Akins branch in Winder (home to an outdoor and indoor pool) athletes will build strength, technique, teamwork, and confidence as they prepare to take the plunge into competition.

To be eligible to participate in our Special Olympics program, the swimmer must be identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disabilities, cognitive delays as measured by formal assessment, or significant  learning or vocational problems due to cognitive delay that require or have required specifically designed instruction.

This program is not swim lessons. During the practice coaches may not be in the water with participants.  There are certain abilities a potential swimmer must know and complete before joining our program. If you are NEW to our team, a list has been provided below to help ensure your swimmer meets the requirements to participate. All NEW swimmers are required to attend an evaluation prior to registration.
