Special Olympics Swim Team

Welcome to a new chapter in inclusion and excellence — the YMCA of Georgia’s Piedmont is proud to launch our Special Olympics Swim Team, built for athletes ages 8+ who are ready to train, compete, and belong. This isn’t swim lessons — it’s a competitive, supportive program for swimmers with intellectual or developmental disabilities who already meet key skills like swimming one length independently, floating on their back, and entering/exiting the water without help.

With practices hosted at our Walton County branch in Monroe (which features an 8-lane lap pool and a warm-water rec pool) and at our Brad Akins branch in Winder (home to an outdoor and indoor pool) athletes will build strength, technique, teamwork, and confidence as they prepare to take the plunge into competition. Our sessions lead toward the 2026 Special Olympics Georgia Summer Games at Emory University.

Each swimmer must attend an evaluation (by appointment) before registration is complete. Program cost is $70 for YMCA members and $85 for non-members, with scholarships available. Space is limited — don’t wait to make a splash on this life-changing team.
